San Souci Drive
Bicycle + Pedestrian Improvements | Providence, Rhode Island
As part of a multi-disciplinary team led by VHB, Halvorson designed a new separated bicycle/pedestrian path along San Souci Drive in Providence. This is the first RI Green Economy Bond bicycle infrastructure project, receiving $550,000 to build the separated bikeway with additional on-road connector improvements.
The San Souci path will fill the missing link in an evolving network of bicycle connections, creating a safer bike route overlooking the Woonasquatucket River and serving as a catalyst for the positive transformation of its congested urban setting. The 700-foot long multi-use path demonstrates a unique placemaking opportunity while at the same time introducing green infrastructure for stormwater treatment.
Halvorson developed a series of landscape improvements, including planting, new signage/wayfinding, the incorporation of art along the path, and new seating and shade structures to enhance connections and access to the water.
