Western Avenue Complete Streets Reconstruction
Streetscape | Cambridge, Massachusetts
Western Avenue operates as a critical connection between Central Square and the Charles River in Cambridge. Halvorson had a major role in reinvigorating the streetscape as a “complete streets” project.
The integrated design strategy includes improved pedestrian crossings, bicycle routes, bus stops, trees and lighting to create a bustling, multi-modal street.
Vibrant planting, green infrastructure, seating elements, and interpretive art installations create an enjoyable space for the community. The team completed an extensive public process to achieve the objective of supporting all users, including walkers, cyclists, bus riders, and drivers.
