Harvard Square's "Pit" Demolished, Marking Milestone in Redesign

“The Pit” before demolition.

Last week’s demolition of "The Pit" at Harvard Square Plaza marked the end of an era and a new beginning for this historic plaza. For decades, Cambridge's Harvard Square has served as a social hub and public event space. More recently, the plaza has experienced issues with flooding and accessibility.

Our landscape architects are working closely with the City of Cambridge, HDR, Inc., and Touloukian Touloukian on the redesign of this plaza. The redesigned Harvard Square Plaza will improve circulation and accessibility, while incorporating trees, planters and new flexible seating to accommodate a variety of events.

The photo below shows a rendering of the redesigned Harvard Square Plaza once fully constructed.
