Titus Sparrow Park Renovation

Halvorson | Tighe & Bond Studio is collaborating with the City of Boston Parks & Recreation Department (BPRD) and Friends of Titus Sparrow Park to refresh this beloved South End park.
Titus Sparrow Park is a popular and heavily used open space that features a balance of passive and active uses, including basketball and tennis courts, a play area, and an open lawn with amphitheater seating.
Halvorson and BPRD hosted a series of public meetings to gather input from the community about their goals for the park. These meetings promoted a design that retains the overall layout and program elements while adding strategic interventions to improve accessibility and safety, expand seating options, restore the athletic surfaces, and enliven the play area.
The new play area is surrounded by a serpentine seatwall that highlights the history of the site and the park’s namesake, Titus Sparrow, first African-American umpire of the United States Tennis Association and a valued member of the community.
Halvorson is working closely with Tighe & Bond engineers to improve drainage within the park.
