Christopher Columbus Park Renovation
Civic Open Space | Boston, Massachusetts
Christopher Columbus Park is Boston’s premier open space on the downtown waterfront. After 25 years of heavy use, the park needed renovation and redesign to address several functional issues, such as universal access.
The renewed design by Halvorson opens up new views of the water, expands usable lawn areas, and reorganizes circulation. Nearly all granite in the park was successfully salvaged and reused to reduce the project’s carbon footprint. The Boston Harborwalk segment along the water’s edge was repaved with patterned asphalt, and new benches were installed to complement adjacent seatwalls.
