Mount Auburn Cemetery: An Ongoing Success Story

Halvorson Design has been collaborating with Mount Auburn Cemetery for more than 25 years, beginning with the development of the cemetery’s first comprehensive master plan in 1993.

When we began working with Mount Auburn, they were running out of burial space, with only about two acres remaining for conventional burials. The iconic landscape, while beautiful, was also in need of restoration and enhancement.

Our work began with an overview of the entire cemetery and the development of landscape character zones that correlated with different periods in the cemetery’s history.

Halvorson Design’s master plan helped to:

  • Extend the active life of the cemetery through innovative planning that located opportunities for expansion

  • Provide attractive alternative memorialization options

  • Diversify offerings beyond burials to attract a broader audience and alternative funding sources

  • Preserve the historic character of this celebrated cultural landscape

  • Uphold the cemetery’s prestigious legacy and standing as a ‘jewel’ of its community

Mount Auburn has been implementing our recommendations for the past 25 years and continues to be a showcase of horticulture and an active setting for a variety of cultural events. Most importantly, they now estimate their remaining burial capacity will last another 100 years!

Halvorson Design has had the pleasure and honor of collaborating with Mount Auburn Cemetery to design several of these improvements. Here are a few highlights:
