Multi-Family Residential + Living Shoreline | East Boston, Massachusetts
Halvorson is collaborating with architect Touloukian Touloukian on a new multi-family residential development facing Wood Island Bay in East Boston.
The waterfront site is being enhanced to provide resilient design measures, including a living shoreline and salt marsh, protecting the site and building from coastal tides. A central courtyard, raised above the FEMA flood plain, gently slopes down to the water and features native plantings and rain gardens to help control on-site storm water. Other site amenities include connections to the Boston Harborwalk, access to the neighboring Constitution Beach, and public kayak storage.
Halvorson’s approach replaces the existing invasives with indigenous coastal bank and upland plantings suitable for environments exposed to inundation and continual tidal salt water exposure.
