Whittier Choice Neighborhood
Affordable Multi-Family Housing | Roxbury, Massachusetts
A collaboration between the Boston Housing Authority, Preservation of Affordable Housing (POAH), and Madison Park Development, the Whittier Choice Neighborhood aims to create a healthier, more vibrant environment for the Roxbury community.
Halvorson designed a variety of outdoor experiences for this new public housing project, which features street-level retail, resident amenity areas, publicly accessible open space, and streetscape improvements. Whittier Choice features three gated courtyards offering a variety of seating options, from quiet, contemplative garden settings to areas suited for gathering.
Playgrounds designed for specific age ranges encourage physical activity and social interaction among neighbors. Tree-lined sidewalks and internal pedestrian pathways provide visual and physical connection between the site and its surroundings and are designed to maximize accessibility and improve pedestrian circulation.
