Tufts University Academic Building
Campus Gateway + Academic Building | Medford, Massachusetts
In collaboration with Tufts University, the MBTA, AECOM/HNTB and CBT Architects, Halvorson developed the landscape design for the Tufts Air Rights Building and the Green Line Extension’s College Avenue station. This important transit terminus and accompanying plaza are intended to act as a primary gateway for Tufts faculty, students, and visitors to access the campus via public transportation.
The plaza, spanning the tracks below, replaces a narrow, inaccessible bridge with a vibrant civic space, unifying the campus, which is divided by the railroad right of way and Boston Avenue. Universally accessible sidewalks, direct connections to the surrounding neighborhoods, and ground floor retail activate the space.
